Cannabis Glossary: Terms You Need To Know

The complex and constantly evolving world of cannabis can seem incredibly confusing to newcomers and beginners. That’s why we’ve taken the time to compile this cannabis glossary of some of the most common cannabis terms. Here are some words and terms that you are likely to come across in your cannabis journey.

Badder: A waxy cannabis concentrate that is similar to butter in texture. Also known as batter. 

BHO: Butane Hash Oil, also known as honey oil. A concentrated oil extracted from hashish. 

Blunt: Cannabis flower that has been wrapped in a tobacco leaf or a blunt wrap.

Bong: A water pipe that uses water to filter and cool down smoke resulting in smoother, bigger hits. 

Bubbler: A smaller water pipe. Similar to a bong but smaller in size.

Bud: A synonym for cannabis flower.

Budder: A waxy cannabis concentrate. Very similar to badder but with a more moist, smooth, and creamy consistency. 

Cannabinoids: Compounds responsible for most of the psychoactive, mind-altering, and therapeutic effects of cannabis ex: THC, CBD.

Capsules/Gel Caps: Gelatin capsules filled with cannabis extract and intended to be swallowed. 

CBD: Also known as Cannabidiol. A cannabinoid that is known for its relaxing and calming effects. Not mind-altering. 

Cannabidiol Oil

 

CBG: Also known as Cannabigerol. A non-intoxicating cannabinoid with therapeutic potential that is found in trace amounts in cannabis. 

CBN: Also known as Cannabinol. A mildly psychoactive cannabinoid that is found in trace amounts in cannabis. 

CO2 Oil: A concentrated cannabis oils extracted using a CO2 liquid extraction process. 

Concentrates: Cannabis extracts that are much more potent than regular flower buds. Known for intense potency and flavor. 

Edibles: Cannabis-infused food, capsules, and candy meant to be eaten. 

Endocannabinoid System: A physiological system of cell receptors and neurotransmitters inside the body. Interacts with cannabis allowing it to produce its effects. 

Entourage Effect: The belief that all of the psychoactive compounds in cannabis come together in synergy to produce a more comprehensive and complete buzz.

Extracts: A synonym for concentrates. More commonly used when talking about oils.

Flower: Cannabis buds.

Cannabis Buds

Hash: Also known as hashish. A solventless cannabis concentrate that is made by pressing together or sifting cannabis trichomes. 

Hemp: A variety of the cannabis sativa plant that is high in CBD and low in THC. Mostly used for industrial purposes.

Hybrid: A cannabis strain that contains a mix of indica and sativa genetics. 

Indica: A cannabis strain that contains predominantly indica genetics known for producing a strong physical buzz.

Kief: A cannabis concentrate. A collection of cannabis trichomes. 

Kush: A variety of cannabis indica originating from the Hindu Kush mountains. Kush strains are known for their sedating physical effects. 

Landrace: A genetically pure cannabis strain that has not been crossed with anything else. 

Live Resin: A cannabis concentrate known for its intense flavor. Made using a unique freezing process that helps preserve the cannabinoids and terpenes.

Marijuana: Synonym for cannabis.

OG: Short for original. You may find this at the end of a strain name, like “Tahoe OG.”

Preroll: A cannabis joint that has already been rolled. 

Rosin: A solventless cannabis concentrate that is squeezed out of cannabis flower and hash.

RSO: Rick Simpson Oil. A medicinal cannabis extract that can be used in a variety of ways.

Sativa: A cannabis strain with predominantly sativa genetics known for producing an uplifting and euphoric cerebral buzz.

Shatter: A thin and fragile cannabis concentrate that shatters into many pieces when handled.

Strain: A specific variety of cannabis with its own unique genetic background. 

Sugar: A cannabis concentrate that looks similar to wet sugar. Like sauce, but not as thick.

Syringe: A medical-grade syringe used to hold liquid cannabis extracts. Not for injecting!

Terpene: An aromatic compound that gives cannabis its smell and flavor, and that works as part of the entourage effect. Also believed to potentially have therapeutic effects. 

THC: Tetrahydrocannabinol. The most prominent cannabinoid that is responsible for producing the mind-altering and euphoric effects commonly associated with cannabis.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

 

Tincture: A liquid containing concentrated cannabis extract. Usually applied sublingually or added to foods/liquids. 

Vape Cartridge: A disposable and sometimes re-fillable plastic container that contains cannabis extract intended for vaping. Can be attached to a 510 thread vape battery to become a fully functional vape pen. 

Vaporizer: An electronic device used to vaporize cannabis flower, cannabis concentrates, and cannabis oils.
