This sleek and sexy eatery across the line in Fargo serves up a globe-trotting selection of fishy bites, from mussels in white wine to seared ahi to tuna tartare with guacamole. But it’s the dynamite renditions of classic fried fish we love: Cod, halibut, and walleye, piping-hot and encased in an unbeatable beer batter crust. With a menu that ranges from savory beef-and-bison meatballs to aged provolone with Aleppo pepper to pizzas like a “BLT†with smoked bacon and harissa aioli, you can be pretty sure you’re not in a standard neighborhood pizza joint. Homemade sausage with tart apple and béchamel sauce? Yes please! The timid can design their own pies, but with such imaginative ingredients (and a focus on locally grown and produced foods and vendors) we’re happy to let Blackbird take the steering wheel and lead us someplace delicious….

Maybe it’s just the northern latitude, but something about the Upper Midwest just demands protein and beer. This cavernous, industrial-chic hall serves up plenty of both, in flavors and combinations you probably didn’t think possible. From the must-try “bacon flight†to the “Porketta bánh mì†to more a la carté sausage varieties than you can shake a frankfurter at, there’s approximately zero chance you won’t leave this place stuffed and happy. Oh, and did we mention the dozens of beers, ciders, and meads on tap?

The location may be drab, the decor uninspiring. But look up to the food—literally, the menu’s up on the wall—and prepare to feast on startlingly tasty renditions of classic Middle Eastern dishes like smoky grilled kebabs, hearty lamb stew, falafel and marinated chicken tikka. It’s a heck of a lot of flavor for not a lot of money; the gracious and friendly service is a welcome bonus.

Classic bagels in Fargo?!? You better believe it. From scrambled eggs with lox to crisp latkes to smoked brisket—not to mention those round holey things—you’ll find an edible tour of a classic Jewish deli here in this invitingly hip little hideaway. Linger on the “Nordic lamb†with lingonberries; savor the “blt†made with crisp chicken skin instead of pork. And whatever you do, bring a bag of those bagels home with you. You’ll be glad you did.

Afterward, don’t forget to visit your favorite Moorhead dispensary!
