One of the best things about cannabis entering the mainstream is that edibles have finally gotten as good as we knew they could be. From zingy cannabis-infused mints to luscious caramels, fruity gummies, and beyond, there’s no limit to the creativity and tastiness being delivered to the edibles space.
Still, with all the options at hand, one classic edible will always have a special place in our hearts: the cannabis brownie. Even if you don’t consider yourself a great baker, learning how to make infused brownies is a breeze. Among all baked goods, brownies are among the most forgiving—they don’t need to rise like bread, it’s okay if they’re a little sloppy, and so long as they’re not completely dry, they’ll still be full of chocolatey flavor.
If you’re ready to get cooking, explore our recipe and discover some of our pro tips on how to get the most bang for your buck, how to measure potency, and where to find the best cannabis for your bake.
Cannabis Brownies: Getting Started
First things first—many home baked edibles use cannabutter or cannaoil as the basic building block for their infusion. If it’s your first time making infused cannabis brownies, check out our easy guide on how to make cannabutter to get started. There, you’ll find detailed instructions on how to make potent cannabutter.
It’s also a good idea to know exactly how much cannabis you’re consuming in general, but it’s essential when it comes to edibles. Why? As it turns out, when we consume cannabis in this way, much of the THC is converted in the liver to a more potent form known as 11-hydroxy-THC. And while consuming more cannabis than you planned to is rarely dangerous, it can be uncomfortable if it’s unexpected, and that’s an experience we want you to avoid!
So, to get the most from your edibles—and to not over-do it—here’s a simple example to figuring out the dosing of your cannabutter and brownies if you were using a strain that contained 20% THC:
- Start with half an ounce of cannabis (14.17 grams or 14,170 milligrams), testing at roughly 20% THC
- Multiply 14,170 x 0.2 (the fraction equal to 20%)
- This gives you a total of 2,834 mg of THC per batch of cannabutter
Every brownie recipe will include specs for the pan it’s cooked in—usually 8” x 12” or similar dimensions. If your pan is this size, you’ll have 96 square inches in total (8 times 12) to work with. Imagine cutting the finished recipe into 1” squares and multiplying the number of squares you’ll end up with by the desired potency—say 10 mg per serving. Here’s an example:
- If you use 1” squares, you’ll end up with 96 servings or 960 mg of THC—about a 3rd of a cup of cannabutter
- If you use 2” squares, you’ll end up with 24 servings or 240 mg of THC—about a 12th of a cup of cannabutter
For a better look at dosages and what they mean for your body, check out our edible dosage chart for more in-depth information. While the ideal dose for you depends on your age, weight, and cannabis experience, shooting for roughly 5-10 mg of THC per brownie serving is a good place to start for those who are new to cannabis or don’t consume it all that often.
