Green Goods’ Top Picks of Safe Gallup Events to Enjoy this Summer

After a long and disorienting year-and-a-half spent in total or partial lockdown, it’s safe to say that many of the residents of Gallup are itching to get out, reconnect with friends and neighbors, and engage in some safe summer activities once again.

Because we love living and working in The Heart of Indian Country, the staff at Green Goods wants to help the town find ways to convene. That’s why we’ve scoured local listings to bring you this list of upcoming Gallup events. And while some venues remain closed as of late June, it’s widely expected that most will return to a full events calendar in the weeks to come.

So with that in mind, allow us to present our list of top upcoming Gallup events!

WildThing Championship Bull Riding: July 9 – July 10

This event is a rip-roaring celebration of all things bull! Combining some of the best bucking bulls in the bullriding world with a thrilling $27,000 payout and a huge fireworks display, this event is billed as the must-see show of the summer. In addition, all proceeds from parking and concession stands will benefit the Manuelito Children’s Home, a place dedicated to providing the young people of northwest New Mexico the love and safety of a family environment.

If you thrill to the sound of dozens of motorcycle engines and the sight of the nation’s top arenacross competitors catching massive air and high-bank turns as they take their machines through a hair-raising race course, this very special event is for you! Over 150 truckloads of dirt will be hailed into Red Rock Park Arena to construct a race course to challenge even the toughest and most seasoned of riders. What’s more, a fleet of “mud bog†trucks outfitted with engines up to 1,000 horsepower will attempt to best a 150-foot mud pit. Tickets are $10; you can find them at the event website or at area O’Reilly’s Auto Parts stores.

Held annually to honor our fighting men and women on Armed Forces Day, this cherished Gallup event brings together motorcyclists, balloonists and spectators in a colorful and family-friendly jamboree. The event includes motorcycle ride from the New Mexico-Texas state line to the New Mexico-Arizona line, as well as a mass balloon flight through the canyons of Red Rock Park on Saturday and Sunday, July 24-25. What’s more, the event benefits Operation Wounded Warrior, an organization dedicated to helping serve those who have served their country.

This event is free, but $30 gets you into the annual Gurley Motor Co. Car, Truck, and Street Rod Show. Held Saturday, July 24, it will feature a stunning collection of vehicles, some of them historic and some of them just plain wild. This is one Gallup event not to miss!

Now in its incredible 99th year, this beloved annual tradition calls together more than 30 tribes from throughout the states to join in parades, dances, rodeo contests, and more. It’s a unique and unforgettable way to sample and partake of the traditions that give Gallup its special flavor: Performing arts, stalls selling Indian foods, and the country’s most complete and varied displays of genuine Indian fine arts including Navajo rugs, kachinas, jewelry, pottery, basketry, leather and bead work, paintings, sculpture, and more.
